It is a good place to look at art. You feel comfortable. Many rooms have actual chairs, not benches, where you can comfortably sit and enjoy the scene. One exception to this was the Rothko room. Mark Rothko visited the Phillips to help with the installation of three of his paintings in one space. A forth Rothko was later added. One of his suggestions was the single bench in the center. Personally, I think a revolving chair would have been better.
There were two relatively new monuments in Washington that I had not seen – the Martin Luther King Memorial and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. Harry very accommodatingly drove me to both and either waited or circled while I was out exploring and photographing.
I enjoyed both but the F.D.R. memorial really captured the essence of the man. He spoke directly to the people through his speeches and fireside chats and the design, which incorporated different spaces for each of his four terms, brought to life the essence of the man and the times.
